Making Waste of Waste

By Jonathan Bardelline

Two major components of greener design are reducing the amount of waste produced and rethinking the idea of waste.

On one hand, Bayer has been eliminating the boxes that some of its products used to come in, and in turn, eliminating any waste that used to come from the production of that packaging and the waste created when customers would take out the bottle and either toss the box in the trash or recycling.

On the other hand is the Cradle to Cradle philosophy and TerraCycle. TerraCycle takes products that are traditionally seen as garbage - whose only destination is a landfill - and turns them into useful items. Its most recent foray is turning scrap plastic into trashcans.

That concept of using waste as a resource is one of the cornerstone of Cradle to Cradle thinking. McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry has been working with companies to help them identify how to use waste as a valuable resource and rethink what goes into their products. And with more than 300 products Cradle to Cradle certified so far, that is one effort not going to waste.

Strategic Sustainability for Leaders: Develop Your Leadership Potential
Date: Mon, 22 Mar
Location: Lisle, IL

Common leadership training focuses on presenting information about new models and techniques. And, while theories and models typically describe effective leadership, they rarely produce it. Embodied leadership emerges from an effective and inspiring way of being. In this 3-day course we focus on highly experiential learning that develops somatic, or body-based, intelligence, allowing the leader to then combine technical expertise to inspire bold, courageous, and powerful change in moving sustainabiltiy initiatives forward. Technical knowledge + embodied leadership = focused action for a generative future.
