The Paths to Change
By Jonathan Bardelline
Wide-spread change is what's needed to have major impact when it comes to using greener materials, ingredients and production methods, so that's why it's pleasing to see Amazon.com's Frustration Free Packaging program attracting more and more businesses.
The program - which assists companies in creating simpler, lighter packaging with fewer materials - is a great example of how one company's actions can spur change far throughout other industries and supply chains.
Other times, though, that change comes from laws like the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which continues to court criticism since Mattel, one of the companies whose spate of recalls led to the new law covering lead limits in kid's toys, has been exempted from one of its requirements.
But still, the law is bringing a lot of attention to the chemicals that go into toys, just like Amazon's packaging initiative is bringing attention to the waste that frequently goes into packaging. More importantly, both have led to real change.
