VERGE

By Derek Top, Senior Editor, Program Director - VERGE

It appears the Green Button is living up to expectations.

Announced earlier this year by then-White House Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra as a "new era of consumer control over energy use, and local empowerment to cut waste and save money," the standardizing of energy usage data in portable formats is catching fire among third-party developers. Yesterday, the U.S. Energy Department announced the first set of winners for its $100,000 cash-prize challenge using Green Button data that included a Facebook app using trees to visualize energy use and an easy way for businesses to obtain ENERGY STAR benchmarks. We look forward to seeing what's next for the Green Button.

In case you missed it, VERGE London was a great success. Be sure to check out Pilgrim Beart from AlertMe.com with a hands-on demo on how to make energy visible and why cities need to be the solution for sustainability challenges in a panel discussion moderated by Rob Cameron, executive director with event host partner SustainAbility. And don't miss Jenn Kho's blow-by-blow recap complete with associated tweets and additional links.

Also this week, Hertz and IBM team up to test microgrid technology integrating distributed renewable energy with EVs, from Talking Points Memo, and Businessweek breaks down the numbers of a newly born smart grid powerhouse as Eaton Corporation acquires Cooper Industries for $11.5 billion.
