VERGE

By Derek Top, Senior Editor, Program Director - VERGE

Getting started on energy efficiency projects could get easier thanks to cheap computing power and data sharing.

Mass.-based start-up WegoWise offers a Web-based platform to analyze water, gas and electric utility bills to help small commercial and multi-tenant apartment building owners benchmark energy use. The tools help spot the most likely candidates for energy retrofits in a building owner's portfolio.

Looking into the evolution of smart cities, Jesse Berst offers lessons learned from the Envision: Charlotte sustainable city initiative. Through public-private partnerships and technology-enabled public kiosks, the North Carolina city is focused on reducing energy and water consumption and remaining competitive in the global market to attract talent and jobs.

Also, UK-based ride-sharing service provider Carbon Voyage has created an online marketplace to cut energy use and carbon emissions by linking buyers and sellers of personal and freight transportation. And The Next Web writes about a research consortium, including the likes of Audi, BMW, Ford, and Deutsche Telekom, that has launched a fleet of 120 "intelligent vehicles" to test the latest car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications.
