Green Plug
What a great idea. We really need to get smarter on our use of energy.
Manufacturer Resistance
My belief is that the primary cause for resistance by manufacturers has nothing to with early adoption fears and everything to do with profit. Accessories (including chargers) are an enormous revenue stream and brand-specific interfaces help retain customers that may consider another manufacturer, but already have a charger for work, home and auto and want to avoid the additional expense of replacement.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great step forward. But, let's be honest about the motives behind manufacturer resistance.
Accessories argument
While I think your point is valid it may be a bit overstated. Just look at the iPod accessory market. Apple is hardly even involved, they only have limited offerings (that aren't even the best for their purpose) at their stores and online. Where as there are at many manufacturers selling acc. at every Best Buy which are in every large town.
The Green Plug is also marketed on the plug to wall side, not the device to cord side. With the Green Plug there seems to be room for proprietary docking connectors, (like Apple's who won't be going to mini usb for the iPhone) while still getting the GreenTalk advantages.
