Curbing Our "Profound Waste" of Water

Published May 04, 2009

Give me a break!

So, we're running out of water, are we? Never mind that it is all recycled and none of it is flying out into space, never to return.....

Political correctness has to stop!

Water supply isn't infinite

The more we pollute our finite fresh water supply, the more it costs to treat it to potable standards. And that takes more energy. And if we're talking energy here, the energy required to desalinate seawater is immense - so really the best and most cost effective solution is to preserve the quality of our existing fresh water.

Water Rights / Infrastructure

In the US we tend to see our reliable daily access to water as a right, not as a privilege. That misperception may be the biggest hurdle we have to overcome in changing our water-wasting ways. Last summer, while the south EAST (not west, as you might expect) was undergoing the biggest drought in recorded history, the governor made only one day a "Don't water your lawn day." Meanwhile, there is still grave concern regarding the future of the southwest freshwater resources. Groundwater supplies are drying up.

We need to use less water, yes. Hoteliers of Las Vegas: take note. But, what most people aren't prepared to face is that a staggering amount of our freshwater resources are lost due to old and or antiquated infrastructure. We need a major overhaul of our nation's water infrastructure. Open pit canals, like those along the Colorado river, have got to go. Leaking pipes abound, in every city - and with those steady leaks, we loose trillions of acre feet of water every year. Nobody thinks twice about our infrastructure, it's buried, and not part of our lives - that is, until a water main breaks. But, it's a big piece of the puzzle that we need to address.
