Co-Op America has been helping to build sustainable businesses almost since the idea came into being. Founded in 1982 as a network for environmentally friendly entrepreneurs, the organization has since grown to include thousands of businesses large and small, all looking for ways to make the planet greener.

The organization also hosts a twice-annual Green Business Conference, one in San Francisco in the fall and another in Chicago that begins on May 14.

I spoke with Denise Hamler, director of Co-Op America's green business programs, about what the conferences have to offer, the growth of green businesses, and how smaller companies are leading the charge of innovation.
