EGHAM, — A recent report,
Green IT: The New Industry Shock Wave, looks at green IT and how it will evolve, and recommends how organizations should transform with it.
The report, by IT research and advisory company Gartner Inc., explains how environmental sustainability and climate change will provide both opportunities and risks for anyone in the IT industry.
Garner seeks to provide IT stakeholders with predictions on how the industry with change in the coming years and what should be done now and in the future to take advantage of changes.
One aspect of consideration is the environmental impact of a company's network.
"Unlike client computing, where significant footprint reduction can arise from simply turning off devices when they are not in use, the network needs to be 'always on' regardless of its utilization," said Neil Rickard, research vice-president of Gartner.
The company suggests determining how much networking is needed, minimizing the number of network devices and layers, and reducing power consumption of devices, which can include buying only power-efficient supplies.
