A good deal of money from the federal stimulus bill will go directly toward Green IT, but that's really only the beginning of IT's involvement in greening the enterprise, or the country for that matter. In many ways, Green IT will benefit indirectly as well. The most notable instance has to do with the $4.5 billion in the package for the smart grid. Utility companies such as Xcel Energy and PG&E Corp. hope to get much of that money. But ultimately, expect big technology companies such as Cisco and IBM to lead the way toward creating the smart grid. IT pros, not electrical engineers, will design and manage the next-generation smart grid. For details, see my blog post,
Why IT Will Take over the Smart Grid.
