The largest U.S. cordless phone maker has developed new club store packaging, cutting out materials and production steps, for its spring line of products.
VTech Communications' new packaging for club stores like Sam's Club and Costco has been reduced by 41 percent, and the company has cut out 99 percent of the plastic used in the packaging. Each completely recyclable package contains 14 ounces less of PET plastic now.
The company has also switched from using UV coating to water-based coating, which not only eliminates chemicals, but also streamlines its production process and eliminates third-party packaging support, temporary packaging and duplicate processes.
As for the actual phones, VTech's spring line continues its commitment to only produce phones that meet the U.S. EPA's
Energy Star standards and the
Restriction of Hazardous Substances regulations in the European Union. VTech is also working towards a goal, set in 2007, of producing zero waste, and prints its catalogs on Forest Stewardship Council certified paper with soy-based inks.
