Probably the most intriguing topic in Green IT these days is the Smart Grid. Although at the moment it's not much more than a catch phrase, most people agree that it will be a boon to enterprises, green IT, and homeowners -- and that it may become the centerpiece of a sizable new industry.
Everyone from Cisco to IBM, Intel, Google and others are all spending considerable time and money on it. Several weeks ago, I wrote that a Cisco spokesperson was quotes as saying that the Smart Grid may end up being
1,000 times bigger than the Internet. She contacted me to say she was misquoted, and so I interviewed her this week about her thoughts about the Smart Grid -- and came away with a new understanding of the grid's possibilities, and why it will dwarf the Internet. Get details in my blog post, "
Cisco: Here's why the Smart Grid Will Dwarf the Internet."
Also this week, we interview John Lamb, the author of The Greening of IT. We've got an
in-depth Q&A with John here, as well as a
short podcast and transcript. Lamb flies all over the world consulting about Green IT, and we catch up to him while he's in South Africa. In the wide-ranging interview, Lamb talks about what's driving the move to Green IT, looks at incentives towards growing it, and has some very good advice for those looking to grab low-hanging fruit.
