SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Alameda County's StopWaste.org program, AECOM Design Sustainability Principal Anthony Bernheim, the David Brower Center and Integrated Design Associates are being honored this week by the U.S. Green Building Council - Northern California Chapter.
The USGBC Northern California Chapter presents its Green Building Super Heroes Awards at a ceremony Friday night at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The new quarters of the 156-year-old academy, which is rated LEED-Platinum, celebrated its first anniversary just last month.
Steve Westly, a former controller and chief fiscal officer for the state of California, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the gala.
During his tenure as California's controller, Westly (pictured right) championed an effort to commit more than $1 billion to clean energy investments.
Westly is now managing partner of the cleantech venture capital company that bears his name, the Westly Group. He also is a member of the board of directors for Tesla Motors.
"U.S. Green Building Council - Northern California Chapter is proud to recognize the outstanding achievements of these pioneers of sustainability," said Dan Geiger, the chapter's executive director. "Our awardees demonstrate the vision, creativity and leadership that typify our region's culture of innovation, and they point the way to greening a new economy."
The award categories and winners are:
The Community Service Award - StopWaste.org is focused on reducing the waste stream for Alameda County. It is the result of the Alameda County Waste Management Authority and the Alameda County Source Reduction and Recycling Board operating as one public agency. Last week the organization issued its own awards to 12 firms that have slashed waste. The agency has made great strides in working with businesses, property managers and owners to green buildings by reducing waste generated during construction and by occupants of existing structures.
The David Gottfried Special Achievement Award - Anthony Bernheim (pictured left) of AECOM is a green building pioneer specializing in integrated building practices and indoor air quality. Bernheim currently serves as the treasurer for the chapter and is honored with the Gottfried Award for a "career and contributions to the industry (that) demonstrate exceptional passion, leadership and commitment to green building, the USGBC and the Northern California Chapter," the organization said
The Green Team Award - The David Brower Center in Berkeley receives the USGC chapter's recognition for a structure (the new center, right) and a project team that showed great vision and best practices in green building. The organization seeks a LEED-Platinum rating for its building.
The Green Groundbreaker Award - Integrated Design Associates better known as IDeAs, is honored for creating the IDeAs Z2 Design Facility -- California's first net-zero energy, zero-carbon commercial building (pictured left).
