In July, Walmart announced the formation of the Sustainability Consortium, a group of academics and others with the ambitious agenda of "establishing the scientific standards to measure the sustainability of consumer products." The consortium, headquartered at the University of Arkansas and Arizona State University, is now an independent organization funded in part by membership from some of the world’s leading brands. Its mission includes creating "scientifically valid and coherent product indexes that will allow retailers to compare consumer products."
