MONROVIA, CA — Naked Juice is making good on its plan to convert all of its bottles to recycled content.
Starting this month, the company will begin transitioning all of its 10, 15.2 and 64 ounce juices and juice smoothies to bottles made with 100 percent post-consumer recycled content.
Naked started using the so-called renewabottles, made of commonly-recycled PET plastic, in mid-2009 for its 32 ounce drinks, and expects the conversion to be complete by the start of 2011.
The Pepsi subsidiary expects the switch will help it avoid using 7.4 million pounds of virgin plastic a year, and the use of recycled content will result in 35 percent fewer packaging-related greenhouse gas emissions.
The change comes on the heels of a packaging switch by Naked competitor Odwalla, owned by Coca-Cola, which is moving its single-serve drinks to Coke's PlantBottle, an HDPE (the other most commonly-recycle plastic) container made with 96-100 percent plant-based materials derived from sugarcane and molasses.
