Website: EDF Green Fleets

With more than three million commercial vehicles on the road in the United States today, teaching drivers to use fuel-smart behaviors can help every one of them get greener quickly.

Putting green fleet practices to work can quickly improve their performance, saving costs and cutting environmental impacts -- one program has resulted in 14 percent average emissions reductions and 4 percent total lifecycle operating costs.

That project is just one of the tools developed by the Environmental Defense Fund in partnership with PHH Arval's GreenFleet program, and shows how making small changes can have a big impact.

The EDF online tools include:

• A comprehensive handbook for fleet managers outlining everything from tips on driving best practices to concrete ways to incentivize changes in driving behavior;
• Template materials for communicating with fleet drivers;
• An online driver-training module, complete with a users guide; and
• a five-step framework for developing a green fleet.
