Calvert Group, a leading firm focusing on socially responsible investing, has developed the Calvert Social Index, a broad-based benchmark of large, socially responsible U.S. companies. The index consists of 468 companies that are weighted on a market capitalization basis. Calvert constructed the index by analyzing roughly 1,000 of the largest publicly traded companies using its social criteria. To be included, companies must meet Calvert's standards in the environment, workplace issues, product safety, community relations, weapons contracting, international operations and human rights, and respect for the rights of indigenous peoples.
