Launched in January 2008, this project aims to make patents relating to environmental processes and technologies open to innovators around the globe. Any company or individual can join the Commons by pledging at least one patent, making it available to others to adapt, expand or implement.

The patents included in the Commons at its inception cover processes are ways to recycle cell phone components at the end-of-life stage into new electronic devices, a patent released by Nokia; a method developed by IBM for replacing liquid solvents with ozone gas as a surface cleaner; and a shock-absorbing packaging insert made of corrugated cardboard takes up less space and is lighter, biodegradable and recyclable, also from IBM.

The Commons are intended to help spur innovation on clean technologies and processes, while at the same time creating new business opportunities for the original patent-holders by bringing new players and partners into the field.
