Citigroup Employees Now Drink Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee

Coffee drinkers at select Citigroup offices around the nation will soon be switching to 100% Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee, thanks to a new company partnership with ARAMARK, a worldwide managed services provider, and specialty coffee supplier Java City.

Rainforest Alliance certification standards guarantee that workers are treated fairly and have access to education and health care, that soil and water quality are not compromised, that waste is managed efficiently, that chemical use is reduced dramatically and that relations with surrounding communities is mutually supportive.

"By partnering to offer this product, Citigroup, ARAMARK, and Java City are supporting coffee growers in Latin America who meet the Rainforest Alliance's gold standard for responsible coffee farming," said Rainforest Alliance's Tensie Whelan. "This partnership serves as a model for companies that want to make a difference through environmentally friendly and socially beneficial initiatives."

Whelan emphasized that the new partnership will directly help struggling coffee farmers in Latin America who are involved with the Rainforest Alliance's certification program. Around the world, the overproduction of coffee has resulted in low market prices, forcing thousands of growers to abandon their farms. Many farmers who remain in business are clear-cutting forests and using chemical-intensive methods to produce their beans, rather than the environmentally sensitive methods advocated by the Rainforest Alliance. On Rainforest Alliance-certified operations, farmers are demonstrating that sound production practices can guarantee a supply of high-quality coffee grown in harmony with nature.

Java City, the specialty coffee roaster, wholesaler, and retailer that is supplying the Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee served at Citigroup locations, owns 30 retail stores in the United States and manages 2,000 wholesale accounts. ARAMARK , with approximately 200,000 employees serving clients in 18 countries, is a leading provider of managed services -- including food, facility, and other support services and uniform and career apparel. ARAMARK serves business, education, healthcare, government, and sports and recreation sectors.
