Food Alliance, a national nonprofit organization based in Portland, is dedicated to promoting expanded use of sustainable agriculture practices using market-based incentives. To accomplish this mission, Food Alliance operates one of the nation's leading certification programs for environmentally and socially responsible agricultural practices. To date, Food Alliance has certified more than 200 different agricultural products, including fruits, vegetables, wheat, wine, livestock, and dairy. Food Alliance has affiliate organizations in St. Paul, Minn., and New York City.

Intel, the world's largest chip manufacturer, is not new to promoting sustainable farming. For example, beginning in 2002, Intel Oregon began an on-site farmer's market so that employees could support local farmers and buy fresh farm products at its Jones Farm, Ronler Acres, and Hawthorn Farm campuses in Hillsboro. The market runs from June to October.

"The farmer's market is tremendously popular among our employees," said Bill MacKenzie, Intel Oregon's communications manager. "It also fits well with our goal of making Intel a great place to work."

As Oregon's largest private employer, with approximately 14,500 employees, workplace satisfaction is a top priority for Intel Oregon. "Participating in Food Alliance's program is one more way we can support our local community and be a good corporate citizen," MacKenzie said.

Said Food Alliance executive director, Deborah Kane: "This relationship reinforces what we've known for a long time: People want access to good, healthy food wherever they eat, and that includes the workplace."
