LG Electronics today announced that one of its LCD computer monitors will be the first product to bear a Sustainable Product Certification from UL Environment (ULE).

The company's E2350VLED 23-inch monitor will be introduced later this week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the tech industry's largest trade show, happening later this week in Las Vegas.

LG's monitor is the first to complete ULE's third-party certification, and meets the IEEE 1680 benchmark for electronics at the Gold level, which LG said was the only monitor on the market to achieve a third-party certification at that level. As a result of meeting that benchmark, the monitor also meets the latest Energy Star criteria.

"LG is committed to environmental sustainability. We strive to design products that address the environmental impact of consumer electronics and offer consumers something better," James Shad, President of LG Electronics USA, said in a statement. "Independent third-party certification by an organization with UL Environment's credibility and expertise underscores LG's sustainability achievements in the minds of consumers and retailers alike."

In addition to energy efficiency, the ULE certification requires products to eliminate or reduce toxic substances, and LG has designed the monitor to be 90 percent recyclable or reusable at the end of its useful life, and the monitor is sold in packaging that is 90 percent reusable as well.

As part of the certification, ULE -- which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Underwriters Laboratories -- conducted audits of LG's manufacturing facilities, assessed the monitor's documentation and records, and put the monitor through benchmarking tests to check Energy Star compliance.

"In an era when 'greenwashing' is growing more prevalent, UL Environment is proud to be able to certify to the public and reassure consumers that this product meets our holistic sustainability criteria for design, manufacture and end-of-life disposal," Stephen Wenc, President of UL Environment, said in a statement. "We expect that consumers who are already very familiar with the UL Mark for product safety will begin looking for the UL Environment Sustainable Product Certification mark as a credible, third-party endorsement of the product's environmental performance backed by rigorous scientific testing and auditing."
