Milliken Offsets 100% of GreenBuild Conference Emissions

Milliken & Company has donated more than 9 million carbon dioxide credits to Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener program -- enough to offset 100% of the CO2 emissions associated with the U.S. Green Building Council's upcoming Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Atlanta. The contribution offsets greenhouse gas is equivalent to the annual amount generated by over 1,300 cars.

The Cleaner and Greener Program retires emission reductions for environmental improvements and certifies events and organizations for positive emission reduction actions. The academy is working with the USGBC and emission-reduction donors to offset all emissions created by travel, hotel stays, meals, and event space at this year's Greenbuild conference in November. Pre-event emission estimates prepared by Cleaner and Greener show that energy use associated with this event will cause emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, particulates, and mercury, and the program is working to offset all these emissions.

Milliken's company-owned forests and small hydroelectric plants reduce and sequester approximately 900 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Companies that take action to reduce pollutant emission are awarded global warming credits that represent an amount of greenhouse gasses prevented from entering the atmosphere. Programs such as Cleaner and Greener allow organizations to donate and retire these credits to offset the environmental impact of events or other activities.

"Milliken's long-time dedication to sustainability is reinforced by this donation of carbon dioxide reductions to offset the emissions from Greenbuild," said Michael Arny, president of Leonardo Academy. "The Cleaner and Greener Program is proud to accept and retire this donation to help make Greenbuild a Certified Cleaner and Greener Event."
