Bill Weihl leaves Facebook; a McKinsey partner goes solo
It’s nearly springtime and notable moves are already shaking up the sustainability world.
Several industry veterans are pursuing new opportunities after more than a decade of service in their roles, including CMC Energy Services’ Kateri Callahan, the World Environment Center’s Terry Yosie and Bill Weihl of Facebook.

Kateri Callahan, CMC Energy Services
CMC Energy Services, a female-owned business that promotes energy efficiency nationwide, has appointed Kateri Callahan as president and CEO, effective in April. The company was founded by Doris Iklé and is now owned by her two daughters.
Callahan joins CMC after 14 years as president of the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE), where she led a staff of 30 and oversaw an annual budget of about $8 million to conduct policy, communications, research, education and market transformation programs in the U.S. and abroad. Under Callahan, the Alliance passed national energy efficiency policies, helped create the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance, the European Alliance to Save Energy and the EE Global conference.
During her time at ASE, Callahan also served as board member for the Business Council for Sustainable Energy and the Green Building Initiative and at Duke and UC Davis institutes for energy and environment. She was a member of the National Petroleum Council from 2016 to 2017, representing environmental views.
Callahan succeeds Eileen McGinnis, who over a decade built CMC from a small company into a nationally recognized organization that provides services to residential, multifamily and commercial utility customers.
Christina Burden, Cutting Edge Capital
Christina Burden joins Cutting Edge Capital as bookkeeper and operations manager, bringing 15 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations in positions ranging from receptionist to VP of finance. Cutting Edge helps mission-driven organizations raise capital to reach their goals.
Burden’s career legacy is dedicated to public service. An Oakland native, she worked for Oakland Parks & Recreation for seven years, then as the finance manager for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and as vice president of finance for Boys & Girls Club of Oakland. She also held roles at the Oakland Unified School District. Burden holds an MBA in accounting from the Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University.
Terry Yosie, World Environment Center
Terry Yosie has stepped down as president and CEO of the World Environment Center (WEC), the global sustainable development nonprofit where he worked for nearly 12 years — a "long or short time depending on your evaluation perspective," as his farewell letter described.
Leaving WEC, Yosie believes that the world’s biggest business sustainability challenges include improving transparency and governance for smaller businesses; personalizing sustainability benefits; preparing the next generation of leaders to implement sustainability and correcting U.S. policy failure around environmental and public health advocacy.
Christy Ann Barlow, GZA
Toxicologist Christy Ann Barlow is now associate principal of GZA GeoEnvironmental, an environmental and geotechnical consulting firm, where she will lead on issues related to occupational, home and environmental exposure to chemical and biological toxics.
Barlow specializes in occupational toxicology and human health risk assessment, with experience in sampling and analysis, toxicology, exposure assessment and risk assessment of airborne chemicals. Previously, she was a managing health scientist and science advisor at Cardno Chemrisk in Boulder, Colorado and she worked as a researcher at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Vermont at Burlington and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She will work in GZA’s Waukesha, Wisconsin, office.
Barlow earned her Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology from the University of Vermont, focusing her dissertation on asbestos-related diseases.
Steven Swartz, McKinsey
Steven Swartz, a partner at McKinsey since 2002, is beginning a new chapter as an independent adviser. He led McKinsey’s West Coast Consumer practice, focused on retail and consumer packaged goods. Besides creating McKinsey solutions for these and other consumer-facing industries, he also has published work about working with supply chains on energy efficiency and urban mobility.
Going forward, Swartz is taking on projects related to the intersection of retail and consumer goods and sustainability, including coaching a CEO at a cleantech startup in Los Angeles.
Bill Weihl, Facebook
After six years as Facebook’s sustainability and energy efficiency manager, Bill Weihl is moving on to the next chapter, according to a post on his Facebook page. A trained computer scientist, electrical engineer and mathematician, he worked in academia and research — including teaching computer science at MIT — before shifting gears to sustainability.
Weihl worked as Google’s Green Energy Czar for six years, leading efforts in energy efficiency, renewable energy and the company’s efforts to go carbon-neutral. Before that, he held executive technology roles at Akamai. At Facebook, Weihl made energy efficiency and energy a priority.
Wherever he lands, Weihl said will focus on climate change.
Tim Swanson and Kevin Bredeson, Skender
Construction firm Skender, which has worked on offices for the Climate Corporation and Glassdoor, has launched a Chicago-based manufacturing company and acquired boutique design firm Ingenious Architecture.
It has hired Chief Design Officer Tim Swanson, formerly of Cannon Design, and Chief Technology Officer Kevin Bredeson, of Suffolk Construction, to lead the new business.
Skender, which champions lean, modular design, waste reduction and transparency, will open a manufacturing facility in southwest Chicago in Q42018 that employs union labor. A CEO and facility search is underway.
On the move
— The World Cement Association named Bernard Mathieu as director of its climate program. He will lead the association’s CEO’s Global Forum on Climate Change in June in Paris, which brings together CEOs and leaders of the association’s member companies to address the cement industry’s environmental challenges. Mathieu has 22 years in the industry, most recently at LafargeHolcim.
—John A. Lanier, executive director of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that funds sustainability education and innovation, was named the chairman of the board at Southface, a leader in designing a regenerative economy for the Southeast. And Christina Weber received the 2017 Ray C. Anderson Sustainability Award at Interface’s February sales meeting in California. She is the company’s regional vice president of global and strategic accounts.
— BSR has promoted Alison Taylor to managing director. She was its director of sustainability management since 2015.
— Sarah Musiker is one of the newest members of the WaterNow Alliance, joining as its communications and outreach manager. She previously worked for GreenBiz and the state of California and has consulted for water tech startups in Tel Aviv, Israel.
— Cone Communications Senior Account Executive Brittany Straughn is moving to John Hancock as senior manager of communications content.
— The Conservation Fund has appointed four conservation advocates to its board of directors:
