Yesterday, the Broadway theatre community in New York announced the launch of "Broadway Goes Green", an initiative designed to reduce the theatre district's carbon footprint and foster the development of sustainable practices.

The initiative covers the three main aspects of Broadway shows: theatre venue operations, running of shows, and creation of shows.

As a result of the directive, industry workers are expected to achieve substantial goals within a year.

Goals include initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of sets, costumes, lighting and transportation, a carbon impact inventory and carbon footprint action plan, and the widespread dissemination of best practices.

While a year may seem like a sharp timeline for such a project, it's encouraging to see a major industry recognize that there isn't time to waste— in a world with scant resources, the future of entertainment hinges on our actions now.
