As a self-proclaimed whisky connoisseur, I am overjoyed at Helius Energy's announcement that a consortium of distillers is building a biomass-fueled combined heat and power plant in Speyside, Scotland.
The plant, which will be built by the Combination of Rothes Distillers Ltd., will use woodchips and distillery byproducts to generate 7.2 megawatts of electricity— enough to power 9,000 homes.
Possible destinations for the plant's electricity include local businesses, the National Grid, and the plant itself.
Construction on the $48.11 million plant will begin later this year and should be completed in 18 to 24 months.
Companies included in the Combination of Rothes Distillers include the Edrington Group, Chivas Brothers, and Glen Grant Distillery Ltd.
