Jonathan Shopley is Managing Director at Natural Capital Partners in London. Shopley's career began in the mining industry in South Africa developing solutions to environmental & social issues at some of the world’s largest natural resource extraction projects. He left South Africa in 1982, travelling through Africa for a year of research into the continent’s development and environmental issues. After settling in the UK, he joined John Elkington Associates (now SustainAbility Ltd) and worked for leading research organisations and businesses taking early action on sustainable development issues. He joined the management and technology consulting company Arthur D. Little in 1990, and spent the following 10 years advising corporates and government agencies on the mitigation of environmental impacts across a range of sectors including clean-technology, information technology, energy, food and pharmaceuticals. He co-founded the company’s sustainable development and corporate responsibility practice, and directed a ground-breaking project for Shell International which culminated in the first Global 100 triple-bottom line public report -- ‘People, Plant and Profits’, and the implementation of Shell’s ‘Sustainable Development Management Framework’ for its worldwide operations and new business development. Shopley joined Natural Capital Partners (formerly The CarbonNeutral Company) in 2001 to lead the company’s evolution from Future Forests which was focused on providing climate change solutions to individuals -- to Natural Capital Partners which works with more than 350 companies from 34 countries to deliver solutions to reduce their environmental impacts.
