Starbucks Backs Rainforest Protection Bean

Putting its money where your mouth is, Starbucks Coffee Co. announced this week that it has committed for a second year to Shade Grown Coffee, a bean grown, harvested, and processed under the auspices of Conservation International, a field-based organization that aims to protect earth's biologically rich areas and help local populations to improve their quality of life.

According to Starbucks, coffee drinkers can help protect endangered rain forests and small farming communities in Mexico when they buy Shade Grown Coffee from the Conservation International conservation coffee project in El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas, Mexico. The bean is certified organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

More Collaborations Planned

Starbucks plans to develop five new projects in Latin America, Asia, and Africa in an effort to replicate the success of the Chiapas Conservation Coffee site. Starbucks notes the production of Shade Grown Coffee requires fewer pesticides and fertilizers, and less clear-cutting of forests, than traditional coffee plantations.

Starbucks also announced it will donate $600,000 over the next three years to Conservation International, which works with farmers to promote water and soil conservation, crop diversification, and chemical fertilizer and pesticide reduction that helps protect the surrounding forest, streams, and wildlife.
