Blair Towns First Certified ‘Green’ Apartment Complex

The Tower Companies' development group has earned LEED certification for Blair Towns, an infill project that transformed a concrete parking lot into 78 eco-friendly rental town homes in Silver Spring. Blair Towns is the first-ever multi-family apartment complex in the U.S. to be LEED-certified "green" by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The USGBC's Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) Certification is the premiere rating system for defining and measuring high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED certification is based upon criteria in five areas: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Innovation in design earns additional credits. Being the first certified apartment complex, The Tower Companies helped define the criteria in this category. "We are delighted to receive the LEED certification for the Blair Towns," said Tower Companies partner Jeffrey S. Abramson, "because it honors what we believe in-ensuring rigorous building standards to help keep America financially and environmentally healthy."

"USGBC is proud to award LEED certification to the Blair Towns," said Christine Ervin, president and CEO, USGBC. "LEED maintains rigorous standards to ensure the efficacy of the nation's only green building standard and The Tower Companies are to be commended for their role in adhering to the standards of the LEED Rating System while building the first "green" rental apartment development in the country."

The Tower Companies designed the Blair Towns based on a philosophy to protect the environment. And by implementing the principles of smart growth and sustainable "green" building practices, Tower hopes to inspire other developers and the Federal government to adopt these practices. The Blair Towns has brought about many benefits to the community including inspirational architecture and healthier, more comfortable buildings due to superior indoor air quality and energy efficiency. While the residents of Blair Towns simply enjoy the many amenities, they are pioneers living in a space elegantly and efficiently designed to preserve our natural resources.

The Blair Towns eco-driven design was created from 70% post-consumer waste recycled content. Sixty-three percent of the materials used were sourced locally, within 500 miles of the project. Energy consumption is reduced by 30% due to energy star appliances, hi-tech "Low-E" glass, and efficient construction techniques and equipment. Water consumption is reduced by 20% due to high pressure low-flow faucets and showerheads and draught resistant landscaping. Non-toxic "green label" paints, sealants, adhesives and carpets increase indoor air quality. On-site Flexcar and proximity to Metro, shopping and restaurants reduces residents' dependence on automobiles.
