Xanterra's Zion Lodge Earns Utah P2 Award

Xanterra Parks & Resorts has received the Outstanding Achievement in Pollution Prevention Award from the State of Utah for its environmental achievements at the Zion Lodge in Zion National Park.

The award is presented by the Utah Pollution Prevention Association, a nonprofit organization affiliated with the State of Utah Department of Environmental Quality. The award recognizes "outstanding efforts that reduce risk to Utah's environment or to public health." Zion Lodge was the only recipient of an Outstanding Achievement award while seven other companies received a Meritorious Achievement award. The award will be presented at the "Collaborative Problem-Solving Summit with Federal and State Land Management Agencies" in September.

"Our goal is to significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with the hospitality industry, and the staff at Zion Lodge has been particularly relentless in pursuing this goal," said Chris Lane, senior director of environmental Affairs for Xanterra Parks & Resorts. "We are continually seeking new and innovative ways to preserve the pristine environment of Zion National Park."

Most of the environmental initiatives at Zion Lodge exceed the requirements of its concession contract with the National Park Service. Some of the lodge's programs include:
  • Becoming an ISO 14001 Certified Environmental Management System

  • Being selected for the elite EPA National Environmental Performance Track Program

  • Achieving a perfect compliance record with all environmental regulations

  • Conserving more than 9 million gallons of water at Zion Lodge in one year

  • Using bio-friendly soaps and cleaners in refillable and bulk containers

  • Installing energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps in all buildings

  • Using electric carts and alternative fueled vehicles instead of gas-powered vehicles

  • Implementing a comprehensive recycling and composting program

  • Serving only sustainably harvested seafood and shade-grown, organic coffee
In addition to the Utah Pollution Prevention Award, Xanterra received two 2004 "Environmental Achievement Awards" from the U.S. Department of the Interior in recognition of environmental initiatives at Zion and Yellowstone National Parks. Earlier this summer, Xanterra received National Park Service (NPS) 2004 Environmental Achievement Awards for its environmental performance at Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks. The NPS Environmental Achievement Awards recognize environmental successes throughout the national park system and highlight those organizations and individuals that have demonstrated superior environmental performance and stewardship during the previous fiscal year.
