United Technologies Launches 'Team Green' to Support Sustainable Cities

United Technologies Corp. has established a new employee volunteer effort called "Team Green" to support environmental programs locally and regionally and to complement its Sustainable Cities initiative. Team Green will hold activities throughout the year in various locations to benefit nonprofit organizations.

The first Team Green project takes place Friday, Jan. 14, at a Habitat for Humanity New York City site in Harlem. More than 20 employees from UTC's corporate headquarters and divisions will perform various interior construction jobs for the project.

"Team Green puts green building practices into the hands of our employees," said Krista Pilot, UTC's director of community affairs. "This is the first step in bringing more efficient, healthy and clean homes to the people who need them most."

Team Green's inaugural project is part of Habitat for Humanity New York City's weekend-long celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday. The celebration culminates Monday with the Habitat for Humanity New York City's Building on a Dream Conference. The conference will showcase a joint green building initiative between Habitat for Humanity New York City and Global Green USA, made possible by a grant from UTC.

In October, UTC launched its Sustainable Cities initiative supporting the development and use of green building practices in urban areas and creating new education programs. UTC awarded $350,000 in grants last year to national and Connecticut programs, and plans to increase that to $500,000 this year.
