BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) International is launching a training initiative help the commercial real estate industry counter rising energy costs and reduce energy consumption.

The BOMA Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP), developed by the BOMA Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program, is supported in part by a grant from EPA. The program provides no- and low-cost strategies for reducing the industry's annual $24 million energy bill while continuing to provide tenants and owners with comfortable space. The new training initiative will launch April 7.

Gary Wood, chair of the BOMA Foundation says: "Energy is the largest controllable operating expense for office buildings. BEEP fills an important gap in the marketplace by offering straightforward and applicable information about strategic energy management. This program is an essential resource that will improve the value of our members' properties and the quality of their management."

Through improved energy performance and operational control, the commercial real estate industry has the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve natural resources with the added benefits of improved property value, better indoor air quality and tenant comfort, and reduced energy costs, according to BOMA chairman David W. Hewett. He explains: "BOMA International members represent 80% of the commercial office real estate in the U.S. If only 10% of our more than 19,000 members adopt BEEP’s no- and low-cost best practices over the next three years, we will reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by 10% which will result in $400 million in energy savings and 6.6 billion pounds less carbon dioxide released in to the atmosphere. You can imagine BEEP’s impact as more and more members and the industry actively implement these practices."

BEEP courses are available nationwide via phone conference, supported by materials delivered over the Internet in real time. Courses run for two hours. Registration fees are $50 per course per site, allowing one or more individuals to participate from the same location.
