Kaiser Opts to Report, Certify Emissions

Kaiser Permanente has opted to report its greenhouse gas emissions through the California Climate Action Registry.

Kaiser Permanente has opted to report its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the California Climate Action Registry.

The healthcare provider's GHG emissions inventory was certified through the registry, leading to Kaiser being granted the title of Climate Action Leader. All emissions are certified by a third party.

"At Kaiser Permanente, paying attention to the organization's impact on the environment is another part of providing total health to our members," Dr. Benjamin K. Chu, president of Kaiser Permanente's Southern California Region, said in a statement. "We want to provide care in a manner that protects and enhances the environment and health of our communities"

The move joins other actions Kaiser has taken to soften its environmental footprint. Its has implemented an employee commuting trip reduction program in Southern California that the company said has avoided 15 million pounds of GHG emissions.

Its Northern California region saw an energy efficiency initiative at 19 facilities that lowered emissions by more than 2 million pounds in 2007.
