NORTHBROOK, Ill., Sept. 19, 2007 -- The latest offshoot of the Sierra Club's CoolCities campaign aims to help cities and companies alike improve the financial and environmental performance of their vehicle fleets.

CoolFleets.com, a new website developed by Donlen and the Sierra Club, provides fleet owners with the full picture of the costs of their vehicles. Using a cost and emissions calculator, groups can compare a wide range of vehicles to accurately determine and compare global warming and air pollution emissions, as well as fuel and maintenance costs for all types of vehicles.

One example of the tool finds that a hybrid vehicle can cost 22 percent less to operate, and emit 46 percent less global warming pollution over a three-year period, than the average mid-size sedan. In addition, the tool provides a financial analysis of carbon output and how it affects the organization's bottom line. The groups hope to make it easier for companies and municipalities to convert their existing fleets into green fleets, while at the same time saving money that might have otherwise been spent on less cost-effective and less environmentally friendly vehicles.
