Xerox Bundles Software to Help Reduce Printer Waste

The software from GreenPrint, which will come included with two of Xerox's Phaser brand color printers, makes it easy for companies to save paper, ink and energy by analyzing and optimizing each page sent to be printed.

As part of its latest green initiative Xerox announced last week that it had created a partnership with GreenPrint Technologies to include GreenPrint's resource-saving software technology with the purchase of two of itsprinting systems.

The software, which will come included with Xerox's Phaser 8560 and 8860 solid ink color printers, makes it easy for companies to save paper, ink and energy. The program analyzes and optimizes each page sent to be printed by looking for the typical characteristics of wasted paper, like pages with just a URL, banner ad, logo, or legal boilerplate. Users can also remove images from a pages before printing, which can dramatically reduce ink and toner use.

GreenPrint estimates that an average user will save over $90 and 1,400 wasted pages per year using the software, and that it also allows companies to tally and report the environmental and economic benefits of installing the technology.

Xerox started the project with its solid ink printers because these products are already designed to be more environmentally friendly than typical printers. Solid ink printers use sticks of non-toxic ink instead of toner or inkjet cartridges, reducing landfill waste and improving indoor air quality at the same time.

All told, Xerox said that including the GreenPrint technology with these two printers will save a cumulative 15,000 trees and 50,000 tons of greenhouse gases each year. The bundle is available immediately, and more information is available at Xerox.com/GreenPrint.
