The Hyatt Regency in Buffalo and the New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council have joined Energy Curtailment Specialists' PowerPay! programs, and Telkonet has landed an energy management services contract with the Columbia Sussex Hotel Group.

Energy Curtailment Specialists Inc. announced Wednesday that the 396-room Hyatt Regency Buffalo had enrolled in ECS' PowerPay! demand response program for Western New York.

The New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council enlisted in the ECS' PowerPay! program in New York City about four weeks earlier.  The Hotel Trades Council building also houses the Hotel, Restaurant & Club Employees and Bartenders Union Local 6 and the NYHTC and Hotel Association of New York Benefit Funds.

By participating in demand response programs, businesses help prevent blackouts and rolling brownouts by cutting their energy use by pre-arranged amounts when alerted to periods of peak demand or emergencies. In exchange for easing up on their draw from the grid, participants receive compensation from ECS.

The reductions in energy use and the compensation rates usually are not disclosed. Businesses typically arrange for the reductions to occur when they would be least noticed by employees or clients.

ECS is the largest privately held demand response provider in North America. The firm based in Buffalo has been named a finalist in the Rising Star category of the Platts Global Energy Awards. Winners will be announced in December.

Telkonet, based in Germantown, Md., announced last Monday that it is providing energy management solutions to the Columbia Sussex Hotel Group, the developer and manager of more than 70 hotels and casinos in 30 states.

The company said its Telkonet SmartEnergy system, an in-room network that responds based on occupancy, is already in place at about 1,300 guest rooms at the Doubletree in Rochester, N.Y., the Sheraton in Philadelphia City Center and the Westin in St. Maarten. The system is to be installed at other properties in the hotel group this year.

In September, Telkonet was ranked No. 2 in the Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 program in Maryland. The program recognizes the fastest growing companies in regional areas across the country.
