Island Press, the Trust for Architectural Easements and the U.S. Green Building Council are launching a series of talks featuring experts on architecture, preservation, planning, finance, real estate and related fields who'll focus on the importance of adaptive re-use to green the built environment.

The series on "Sustainability and Historic Preservation" begins Monday evening, Jan. 12, with a panel discussion that is free and open to the public at the SEIU Conference Center in Washington, D.C.

The scheduled speakers are Geoff Anderson, president and CEO of Smart Growth America; Lawrence Frank, the Bombardier chairholder in Sustainable Transportation at the University of British Columbia and a senior non-resident fellow of the Brookings Institution; Christopher B. Leinberger, a land use strategist, developer, teacher, consultant, author and a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution; and Barbara McCann, a public policy and communications expert who wrote the groundbreaking report "Measuring the Health Effects of Sprawl," which detailed scientific research that links the built environment to physical activity and health. Island Press Senior Editor Heather Boyer is to moderate the discussion.

Island Press is offering the talks in partnership with the Trust for Architectural Easements and the USGBC as part of the publishing company's Beyond Books events and programs. Last fall, Island Press and the USGBC teamed up to establish an online book club that offers books on green building for industry professionals.
