Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. has enlisted another group of its portfolio companies to participate in a year-old partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund through efforts that are designed to help businesses track and improve their environmental performance.

The first group of KKR firms to undergo the process -- Sealy, Primedia and US Foodservice -- saved $16.4 million and prevented more than 25,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions as a result of their work in the Green Portfolio Partnership.

The members of the new group are:

Accellent Inc., a provider of fully integrated outsourced manufacturing and engineering services to the medical device industry
Biomet Inc., a designer and manufacturer of orthopedic medical devices and other products chiefly used by surgeons and medical specialists
• General merchandise discount retailer Dollar General Corporation
• Software and IT firm SunGard Data Systems Inc.
HCA Inc., a healthcare services organization that includes 163 hospitals as well as outpatient facilities in 20 U.S. states and England

The environmental goals of the companies include reducing greenhouse emissions from facilities (Accellent, Biomet, Dollar General and SunGard), reducing waste (Dollar General) and improving efficiency of offices and data centers (SunGard). The firms plan to establish GHG and waste baselines as are appropriate for their goals, set measurement protocols and use them to make assessments, in addition to setting annual performance goals.

HCA, which has already set environmental and sustainability goals, will develop a strategic approach to achieving them.

KKR says it plans to extend the Green Portfolio Project participation to all its companies. The partnership also is working to expand the information, tools and resources that are available to other business and will make that material available at http://innovation.edf.org/.
