Caesars' CSR Report Touts Green Meetings, Recycling Efforts

Caesars Entertainment has switched tens of thousands of bulbs to more-efficient models, recycled tons of soap and set new resource and waste goals, according to the casino company's latest sustainability report.

In the past year and a half, Caesars has also trained numerous managers on holding sustainable events and kept itself on track to meet a carbon reduction goal.

Covering 2010 and early 2011, Caesars' sustainability report is the second such report for both the company and the casino-entertainment industry.

Caesars, which owns 52 resorts and brought in $8.8 billion in revenue in 2010, launched its CodeGreen environmental sustainability strategy in 2008, and updated it in 2011 with new targets.

The company aims to reduce energy use 25 percent and water use 15 percent, both per air-conditioned square foot of space. Caesars also plans to increase renewable energy 15 percent and divert half of its waste from landfill. All goals are for 2020.

Caesars also reports it's on track, based on performance in 2010, to meet its goal of reducing carbon emissions 10 percent between 2007 and 2013.

As part of energy reduction, Caesars began replacing halogen bulbs with LED lights, which use 90 percent less energy. The company plans to have 65,000 bulbs switched by the end of the year.

And one waste stream the company has particularly gone after is all those small soaps and little bottles of shampoo, conditioner or other toiletries put out each day for guests. By working with Clean the World, Caesars employees began collecting soap and other items, and passing them to the non-profit, which sanitizes and distributes the items to low-income communities in the U.S. and to developing countries.

With casinos in the U.S., U.K. and elsewhere, Caesars began collecting resource and other performance data from resorts with its CodeGreen Scorecard, and it plans to have all new buildings be designed to meet LEED silver requirements.

As for what happens inside its facilities, and a continuation of the company's employee-focused efforts, Caesars created a green meeting and events certificate program for all meeting and banquet managers to go through. So far, 200 managers from 17 resorts have completed the course, which covers how green meeting planning strategies and initiatives.
