David Bennell is the North American Manager of Food, Land and Water for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD.org) where he focuses on climate smart agriculture and global food systems. Previously, he was Director of Food and Capital Markets for the investor-led organization Ceres.
David’s interest in working in health and business began at an early age when a river near his hometown caught on fire...twice. As a teenager, he worked as a greenskeeper for his family’s golf business and continued getting his hands dirty in college working on his school’s farm. He once spent a seasick summer working on a fishing boat off the coast of Maine. These experiences led to an interest in combining his love of the outdoors with business.
He’s worked in the corporate sector for Microsoft, REI and LL Bean, taking from each company a sense of what makes them uniquely great. His career also includes working as a philanthropic funder focused on sustainable forestry, the co-creation of the for-profit social enterprise company CottonConnect, co-creation of a $10 million impact investing fund focused on food and agriculture, and leading the apparel industry NGO Textile Exchange.
David is a lifelong educator and recently created a seventeen-part video series on Linked In/Lynda.com called Sustainability Strategies and held a five-year adjunct faculty positon at MIT teaching the new product development process.
