Frances Bula
Journalist
Frances Bula is a Vancouver-based journalist who has been covering city politics and urban issues in the region for 20 years.
She is formerly the urban columnist for Vancouver magazine, where her work earned multiple awards, including best column in Canada and best in British Columbia. Bula also writes regularly for Canada’s national newspaper, the Globe and Mail, about Vancouver, after having covered education, social issues and the city beat for 20 years at the Vancouver Sun.
Frances has traveled to China and Hong Kong on special fellowships and received the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy early in her time on the city beat, which allowed her to spend a year covering homelessness and housing policy in Canada, the United States and Europe for a series in the Toronto Star. She is the chair of the journalism department at Langara College in Vancouver, an adjunct professor at the University of B. C.’s journalism school and a member of the advisory committee for the Simon Fraser University Urban Studies program.
