Wanqing Zhou is a research associate in the Food and Agriculture Program at the Worldwatch Institute. She joined Worldwatch in 2012 as an intern in the China Program. Her current research interests include the global expansion of industrial animal farming practices, its impacts and alternatives. She tries to connect the economic, social and environmental realms of the livestock issue and explore local solutions with a vision of sustainability. She works closely with innovative participants in the food and agriculture industries, government officials, non-profit organizations and scholars. She is also part of an international network on sustainable livestock production and dietary shift.
Prior to joining the Food and Agriculture Program in 2015, Wanqing worked with Brighter Green, a sustainability policy action tank in New York, where she developed the research idea on the international dynamics in the livestock and feed industry, and led a screening tour of Brighter Green’s documentary What’s For Dinner?across tens of cities in China. Wanqing also studied the gender-climate issue at the Alliance to Save Energy,participated in the pre-study of Beijing’s emission trading system pilot with China’s National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC), and worked on freshwater ecosystem conservation at the World Wide Fund for Nature — China Programme Office as an intern.
Wanqing holds a B.S. in Biotechnology and Ecology from the University of Hong Kong, and an M.A. in Climate & Society from Columbia University. She speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Japanese.
