"We are having conversations around interesting things happening in the future of manufacturing," said Erin Meezan, vice president and chief sustainability officer at carpet manufacturer Interface.
One of those questions: Can a factory mimic a forest? In a pilot project with the Biomimicry Institute, Interface is aiming to build a "positive factory" that not only has no negative environmental impacts but creates a net positive.
"We are measuring high-performing ecosystems and the services they provide and translating those into a set of building metrics that our factories can achieve," said Meezan.
The goal won't be achieved immediately, but what began as the seed of an idea has taken root in the company's plans for the future.
