"When the green movement started, you didn't have to talk to communities," said Connie Lau, CEO and president of Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI). But today, they are active participants as Hawaii transitions to 100 percent renewable energy by 2045.
Surprisingly, some islands first rejected the idea of wind farms on their land; this means people need to buy into the transition and all the changes and considerations that come with it.
"We are hearing from communities," said Lau. "That's what makes Hawaii different. We are far out ahead on these issues."
